Ringtones are all the craze these days and allow users to personalize their phone

If you called Renae Banks, her phone would play “Honky Tonk.”

In a world filled with cell phones, ringtones that play songs from popular to classic or sounds from ordinary to odd serve the practical purpose of defining one phone’s ring from another. But, because of that uniqueness, they can also reflect the personality of the user.

“My daughter changes my ring tones all the time, but I usually use a default,” Banks said. “Right now my ringer is ‘Honky Tonk.’ My daughter loves country.”

“I update my ringers with new songs,” said Porsche Lane, who like Banks, was shopping at Vernon Park Mall.

Ringtones can be heard in malls, grocery stores, and hallways blending together almost sounding like a mixed track on a CD. They range from fire engines to “Pachelbel’s Canon” and it’s rare that you hear the same ringtone these days. Of six people interviewed at the mall, none used a phone that simply rang, as in r-i-i-i-n-ng.

Heather Hamilton uses a default ringer on her phone that sounds like a popping noise.

“I like this ringer because it describes my personality,” she said. Hamilton admitted that when she gets bored she changes her ringers as well as her boyfriend’s, John Sutton.

“I don’t change my ringtones, but she tells me when she changes them,” said Sutton.

“I’m a big sports fan so I picked the Carolina fight song,” said Will Jarman. “I also picked the fire engine ringer because I’m a volunteer firefighter.”
